Tybee Island Maritime Academy Students Lend a Hand Before Irma

On Thursday, September 7, fifth graders at Tybee Island Maritime Academy spent their day filling sandbags in preparation for Tropical Storm Irma. The sandbags helped secure not only the school but were also given out to members of the community to help prevent flooding in their homes. School Principal Pat Rossiter said assisting prior to the tropical storm taught his students an important lesson in community service.

The students’ hard work paid off. In addition to helping their school and community, they were featured locally in the Savannah Morning News and on WABE Radio in Atlanta.

Tybee Island Maritime Academy closed in preparation for the tropical storm last Friday following a mandatory evacuation order issued by Gov. Nathan Deal. The school is expected to reopen next Monday along with the other schools in the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System.

91ÌÒÉ«ÊÓƵ is still waiting for official word from school leaders, but the Tybee Island Fire Department has reported the school was spared any major damage. Georgia Charter Schools Association is thinking of those on Tybee Island, in Savannah and other parts of Georgia whose homes and businesses were affected by Tropical Storm Irma.
