Drew Charter School Student Selected for United States Senate Youth Program

Georgia Charter Schools Association wants to congratulate Charles R. Drew Charter School student聽Alvin Winston. Winston has been selected as a delegate to the 55th annual United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP), which will be held March 1 through 11, 2017, in Washington, D.C. He will also receive a $10,000 undergraduate college scholarship. Winston is one of only two students selected to represent Georgia. The other student chosen for the honor is Jacob Cone, a resident of Thomasville.

Winston currently serves as vice president of Drew鈥檚 student body. He was previously student body president and president of his freshman class. He was appointed as chairman for 21st Century Leader鈥檚 Youth Ambassadors. Winston has also attended the Governor鈥檚 Honors Program as a social studies major, studied Constitutional Law at the Duke University Talent Identification Program and Global Health through Harvard鈥檚 pre-college program. He will be a member of Drew鈥檚 first graduating high school class.

鈥淎lvin Winston has been at Drew Charter School for seven years and has excelled in Drew鈥檚 STEAM environment,鈥 said Don Doran, Head of Schools for Drew Charter School. 鈥淎lvin has flourished at Drew and is a confident student with a deep love of politics, serving in several school political positions during his tenure at Drew. We are thrilled that Alvin will have this incredible experience in Washington, D.C. and are confident that he will use the knowledge gained to make transformative change.鈥

When Winston attends college next fall, he wants to major in political science and African-American Studies and minor in Spanish. In law school, Alvin he plans to specialize in immigration law and eventually hopes to become a U.S. Supreme Court Justice.

鈥淚 congratulate Jacob Cone and Alvin Winston on this great accomplishment,鈥澛爏aid Senator Isakson. 鈥淓ach has an impressive record of commitment to service and to their studies, and I applaud them. These students will learn a great deal during their visit to Washington.鈥

鈥淪tudents selected to join the United States Senate Youth Program are strong leaders in their communities and classrooms,鈥澛爏aid Senator Perdue. 鈥淐ongratulations to Jacob Cone and Alvin Winston on receiving this honor, and to Julia Powell and Hannah Payne for being chosen as alternates. I look forward to hearing about these young leaders鈥 bright futures.鈥

Georgia State School Superintendent Richard Woods selected Winston for the highly competitive merit-based program after receiving a large number of student nominations from teachers and principals throughout Georgia. The United States Senate Youth Program brings the most outstanding high school students from each state to Washington D.C. for comprehensive study of the U.S. federal government and its leaders.

The program is funded by the Hearst Corporation and is designed to give delegates a better understanding of the U.S. political process and nurture a lifelong commitment to public service.
