The COVID-19 pandemic has been emotionally challenging for students of all ages. To keep students connected and support their well-being, Deonte Bridges, an eighth grade English Language Arts teacher at Atlanta Heights Charter School, has worked to engage students through social media. Mr. Bridges has used Instagram and other social media platforms to hold trivia contests, scavenger hunts, a talent contest, and posted resources to provide support. He also hosted a conversation between students and a hip-hop artist focused on economic empowerment and using creative writing for self-expression. He has also held virtual lunch break sessions allowing students to fellowship and speak with him in an informal setting. In his virtual classes, Bridges frequently takes the pulse of how students are feeling through a 鈥渕ood meter,鈥� which gives them the opportunity to share how they are feeling through words or a color scale. It allows him to check in with any students who are struggling or facing challenges outside the classroom. His goal has been to find unique ways to provide students with a safe and engaging place that his physical classroom once served. During the holidays, Mr. Bridges enlisted the support of local businesses and personally delivered gift cards to students who were putting forth an exceptional effort in his class.聽

Mr. Bridges is passionate about doing all that he can to serve his students during the pandemic because he grew up nearby in the same community. He wants to ensure that his students don鈥檛 鈥渇all through the cracks,鈥� and for them to know there is someone in their corner who believes in their success.
